the kidnapping and rape of an autistic teenage girl who walked away from a group home in oakland. ktvu's heather holmes is live at opd headquarters and tells us how police tracked down the alleged attacker and what she's learned about the man's past. heather. >> reporter: police tell me that surveillance cameras at the fruitvale station caught the man and they knew he was their suspect. so when he showed back in the area on sunday officers arrested him and these court documents that we obtained they detail the three day ordeal involving kidnap and rape. the severely autistic boy walked out of the fred finch youth center last tuesday and police say right into the hands of a predator. >> this is by far one of the most sickening cases i've seen in my career as a police officer that someone can take advantage of someone of this stature. >> reporter: that one is gary atkinson of san francisco. he was charged with kidnapping and rape. >> the child was resilient. she assisted the investigators in this case and we're proud of her courage. >> reporter: the 16-year-old who is autistic left her home and k

. >>> a bomb scare late tonight led to the evacuation of a strip mall in oakland. a security guard reported a suspicious package at the mall on eighth street and market around 3:30 this afternoon. there are restaurants and shops at the mall and police ordered everyone out and called the alameda bomb squad. shortly after the bomb squad arrived they determined the package was in fact, not dangerous. and the all clear was given around 6:30 this evening. >>> the fire crew made a gruesome discovery while responding to a fire. once the fire was out, firefighters found a body among the ashes. there's no word yet on the victim's identity or what caused the fire. >>> fire investigators in san jose were still trying to figure out what caused an early morning restaurant fire. the fire broke out just after 7:30 a.m. at the taqueria lorena. most of the damage was in the attic, no one was hurt. >>> contra costa officials will meet tuesday to make cuts since voters rejected a budget cut. the stations being closed are station number seven, station 11 on clayton, station 12 on shell avenue in martinez. and

tonight of a police chase that ended with a crash in oakland. officers spotted a stolen vehicle in san leandro late this afternoon. police chased the car to 105th avenue in oakland. that's where the car crashed into other vehicles including a police cruiser. two suspects ran from the scene police later caught them and arrested them, one suspect had minor injuries. no one else was hurt. >>> vallejo police are looking for the driver who hit a pe -- a pedestrian then took off hitting a man leaving him at the scene. he receive add head injury and was hospitalized. witnesses say the suspect was racing down the street. the car is described as a black honda civic with front end damage. >>> police are investigating why two cars collided leaving a man injured. the woman from san jose was driving the toyota camry she was pronounced dead. the other driver is still being treated for his injury. >>> nurses have taken to the picket line. it is the eighth strike since talks between the union and hospitals broke down. and at one of the picket lines in berkeley that is where ktvu's cara liu joins us t
with a crash and two people headed to the hospital. oakland police say it began at 8:00 when they tried to stop this black car. officers say it was reported as a stolen vehicle. the driver took off and within minutes crashed into a mazda and crashed into a fence. the driver in the mazda and the driver of the black car were both taken to the hospital. the injuries we are told are not considered life threatening. >>> now to san francisco where we have learned the identity of a pedestrian that was hit and killed. the driver was hit by a white dodge truck. police say he is cooperating. paramedics were unable to revive the victim. he was 75-year-old wen. >>> in walnut creek, crews are working at this hour to repair a broken water main. it broke in afternoon at ignacio at wiggins lane. we're told the work will begin tonight and will be done by tomorrow morning. we'll be checking into the construction work starting tonight. >>> and investigators are headed to hex ka -- to mexico to investigate a crash involving riv era. >> i would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart. all of the fan

in the santa clara valley that's when it was really coming down. you can see by the oakland area, by skyline boulevard you have some light showers there. some showers down around san leandro we head out toward beach front boulevard near belmont. you see showers there. how about roson avenue getting heavy activity. at least toward campbell. but as we worked our way toward evergreen and san felipe road you see significant rainfall on these bands. you touch on here an we show you rainfall bands at .2 an hour. that's significant rain and you head down toward the corridor and gilroy. they were getting hammered for a time today this evening and now they're getting a little bit of a break. but the rain came down hot and heavy there. the santa cruz mountains they're getting a lot of rain and it's coming down fast. as it stands right now, the showers are starting to die down, the worse is over. it was a fast moving system and we're fortunate it is coming down fast. it could have caused bigger problems but it migrated through rapidly. i'm going to be talking about showers still lingering, we're going
